Everything you need to live your best no-alcohol / low-alcohol lifestyle.

Dry Weddings: Essential Tips for Choice and Inclusion

Dry Weddings, where no alcohol is served, have recently made headlines. But they are far from new. For many cultural and religious communities, alcohol free weddings have been the norm for generations.

What is changing is the growing number of couples choosing Dry Weddings for lifestyle, wellness, financial or personal reasons rather than tradition alone.

Muslim weddings typically do not include alcohol because Islamic teachings prohibit its consumption. Some other religious and cultural communities also choose alcohol free celebrations for faith, tradition or personal reasons. In other words, Australians have been celebrating weddings without alcohol long before Dry Weddings became a broader lifestyle trend.

What is new is the broader movement toward NoLo lifestyles and drinking moderation. More Australians are choosing alcohol free options, taking breaks from drinking or simply expecting better non alcoholic choices when they socialise.

At NoLo Life, we’re all for this change. But we also believe the key to a truly inclusive celebration especially a wedding is choice.

Too often, people who’ve chosen not to drink know what it’s like to be excluded at events. But swinging the pendulum too far the other way by only serving non-alcoholic options can leave some guests feeling ignored, particularly if having a glass of wine or a toast is part of how they connect and celebrate.

How to Make Dry Weddings More Inclusive

Dry Weddings can work beautifully when they reflect the couple’s values and the needs of their guests. The key is making sure people still have thoughtful drink choices available. Alcohol free wine, beer, cocktails, sparkling drinks and other NoLo options can help the celebration feel generous and considered rather than restrictive.

If your entire guest list is alcohol-free, fantastic, go dry and go big! But if you’re hosting a diverse crowd, it’s worth considering a few things.

Do you have any guests who are in recovery? If so, speak with them ahead of time. Some may appreciate a dry event, while others are fine being around drinkers as long as they aren’t seated at the “party table.”

Worried about certain guests over-drinking? Rather than banning alcohol altogether, assign a few trusted friends to gently keep an eye on things or be ready to call a cab if Uncle Barry starts breakdancing precariously close to the cake.

If budget is a concern, ask your venue whether BYO alcohol or a cash bar is permitted under its licence and policies. If it is, either option can help manage costs while still giving guests a choice.

If over-consumption is a concern with a few of your guests, make sure your venue has a strict RSA practice.

Go soft or go home! If you’ve decided to hold a hard line on no alcohol, make sure you specify that in your invitation, and include on your RSVP card beverage options that include alcohol-free beer and wine for those who want drinks choices that mimic alcoholic versions.

Dry Weddings can be joyful, sophisticated and memorable, especially when couples put the same thought into alcohol free drinks as they would a traditional bar menu.

Ultimately, it is less about whether a wedding is wet or dry and more about creating a celebration where people feel welcome. Whether that means sparkling wine, sparkling water, alcohol free beer or all three, thoughtful choice can make the experience better for everyone.

If you are planning an alcohol free wedding, explore NoLo friendly venues and beverages to create a drinks menu your guests will genuinely enjoy.

Let’s remember: it’s not really about “wet” or “dry” weddings. It’s about creating inclusive spaces where everyone – drinkers, non-drinkers, and those in the “grey area” in between – feels welcome and celebrated. Because when it comes to the NoLo revolution, everyone’s a winner!

If that means offering both sparkling wine and sparkling water, then why not?
