The Big Boom, the Quiet Bust: What’s Happening to Independent AF Beer?

The Big Boom, the Quiet Bust: What’s Happening to Independent AF Beer?

Australia’s love affair with non-alcoholic drinks is growing faster than anyone predicted. Supermarkets, bars, and bottle shops now dedicate whole fridges to alcohol-free options, and many of us have found new favourites that let us socialise without sacrificing clarity, wellness, or early mornings.

But behind the excitement lies a quieter, more sobering trend: some of the pioneering independent brands that helped build this movement are closing their doors. And their stories reveal a fragile market sitting beneath a fast-growing category.

In recent months, Beneficial Beer Co, one of Australia’s most celebrated alcohol-free craft beer brands — and twice voted the best in the world — has wound up operations. Soon after, Sobah, a trailblazer known for championing Indigenous ingredients and culture, entered voluntary administration. Add to that UpFlow, another early AF beer specialist which deregistered last year, and a picture begins to form.

This isn’t a blip. It’s a pattern.

The Boom and the Reality Behind It

Every headline tells us the same thing: the NOLO category is exploding. People want healthier options. Pubs want to diversify. Retailers want to meet demand.

So why are the very brands that helped start the revolution struggling to survive it?

According to Beneficial Beer’s founder, David Jackson (DJ), the growth hides some hard structural truths:

“The cost-of-living crisis has impacted consumer spending across the board, and in beer, price has become the key driver for many customers. For smaller independent brewers like us, competing on price is incredibly difficult without the economies of scale and distribution advantages that larger players enjoy.”

In other words: people are buying more alcohol-free drinks, but they’re increasingly buying them from the biggest players in the market.

Global giants have the money, the marketing power, and the national distribution networks. They can produce alcohol-free beer at volumes — and prices — small producers simply can’t match.

As DJ explains:

“Duopolies exist at nearly every stage of the industry, from production to distribution to retail. They create significant barriers for smaller, innovative, multi-award-winning brands like ours.”

Why Independent AF Brands Matter

Independent alcohol-free brewers aren’t just selling beer — they’re shaping culture.

They were the early risk-takers who put flavour, quality, and authenticity into a category once dismissed as a novelty. They pushed the big brands to lift their game. They offered consumers choice at a time when there was almost none.

DJ reflects on that mission:

“Our mission was always more than just selling beer. We wanted to give Australians greater choice and help people make healthier lifestyle decisions without feeling like they were missing out socially.”

When small pioneers close, the impact extends beyond the market. We lose innovation, creativity, and diversity. We lose the unique flavours and identities that make the movement vibrant. And for venues and consumers alike, the landscape narrows, increasingly dominated by the same handful of multinational names.

What You Can Do

Independent brands survive when consumers choose them.

If you value innovation, local Australian producers, flavour diversity, and a more inclusive drinking culture, your purchasing decisions matter.

  1. Ask for local alcohol-free options at bars, pubs, and restaurants.
Venues stock what people request. Your voice helps shape their range.
  1. When shopping, choose a local or independent AF beer first.
Small producers feel every single sale.
  1. Share what you discover.
Tag brands, venues, and NOLO Life. Visibility keeps independent producers on shelves.

Australia’s non-alcoholic revolution should be a diverse ecosystem that allows both established and innovative, emerging brands to thrive.
