Everything you need to live your best no-alcohol / low-alcohol lifestyle.

Venue in the Spotlight: Ritual

Looking for alcohol free drinks Kangaroo Island locals and visitors can enjoy without settling for boring alternatives? Ritual offers a thoughtfully curated NOLO cocktail list alongside a grazing menu of Italian, Polish and Native Australian small plates, making it a standout choice for mixed groups of drinkers and non-drinkers.

NoLo Life caught up with Sarah from Ritual to learn more about the venue, its island-inspired atmosphere and why NOLO inclusivity has become such a core part of its drinks program.

Why Ritual Stands Out for Alcohol Free Drinks Kingscote

Ritual stands out for alcohol free drinks Kingscote because its NOLO offering goes well beyond a token zero beer or soft drink. Guests can choose from signature non-alcoholic cocktails, sophisticated NOLO wine, beer and aromatic alcohol alternatives, all selected with the same care as anything on the alcoholic list.

Step inside and you'll find a child-free, calm and considered space with gentle lighting and eclectic but intentional decor, paired with a grazing menu spanning Italian, Polish and Native Australian cuisine. Guests often say it feels like being welcomed into someone's home.

For anyone searching for alcohol free drinks Kingscote, that level of thought makes the whole experience feel genuinely inclusive rather than an afterthought.

Tell us about Ritualwhat was your inspiration and why Kangaroo Island?

Neither of us are from Kangaroo Island originally, but we both fell in love with the blissful solitude and connection to nature available here. It’s a gorgeous place, and the wild areas are impossible to tire of, BUT… with no disrespect to our cute little towns, they can lean a bit too sleepy at times. We were craving the sort of vibrant, city-infused culture of the wine bars we’ve known from places like Melbourne, Adelaide, and more populated regional tourism destinations. Ultimately, it was a selfish move. We just really wanted to create the kind of place we’d love to hang out in, right here in the town where we live.

What sort of clientele typically visit Ritual and what’s the atmosphere of your venue like?u to be so non-drinker-inclusive?

We get such a wild mix of people here, but what they all have in common is that they’re good humans – locals and tourists with a lot of respect for each other, an appreciation of the finer things in life, and a generally compassionate and lovely nature. We’re a child-free venue, so that contributes to a fairly mature and calm atmosphere. The lighting’s always pretty gentle and the music soft enough you can still have a conversation, but we do get a lot of positive feedback on the song selections and the decor. It’s eclectic but all very intentional, and people seem to notice and appreciate the care that’s gone into the ambience, the decor and the food and drink selections. There’s a lot of detail here, plenty to absorb aesthetically, and we’re repeatedly told it feels like being welcomed into someone’s home, so that’s pretty neat.

What can visitors expect from your cuisine?  Is there a “must try” plate you recommend?

We really try to offer a range of small dishes that allow people to have a grazing adventure through Italian, Polish and Native Australian cuisine. The menu has been designed to honour our heritage as well as our home here in Australia. The saltbush tartina is the perfect way to start that exploration, and it sparks a lot of conversations about utilising native and local ingredients. I think there’d be riots if we ever attempted to take it off the menu. It’s just a little morsel, but it’s a perfect showcase of our local saltbush, and absolutely impossible to share. It’s dangerously moreish, you definitely need at least one to yourself.

I imagine your venue gets a true international mix of clients being a popular tourist spot.  Do you notice anything different patterns of drinking from overseas visitors, and if so what?

Honestly we’ve been really blown away by the uptake of non-alcoholic drinks from our local Kangaroo Islanders and from our interstate Australian visitors. Overseas visitors so far have been a little more likely to stick with alcoholic drinks whereas Australians are fully embracing the non-alcoholic drinks and zero alc cocktail offerings here at Ritual. That being said, a well-named NOLO cocktail seems to melt all international barriers – our Ritual Love Potion got an enormous response all round. We probably should put it back on the menu soon, but I’ve been a bit obsessed with developing new drinks and want to give more of them a chance to shine.

You have a really well selected choice of AF sparkling wine, beer, cocktails and sophisticated aromatic alcohol alternatives. What led you to being so NOLO inclusive? And how did you choose your AF offering?

Hey thanks! We’re super proud of our selection here. But being NOLO inclusive wasn’t really a strategy for us. It actually started because we (who ADORE wine, I might add) just don’t drink alcohol that much or that often. I’d rather have something really special infrequently than drink regularly. But when we’re not drinking, we don’t suddenly become children or sugar junkies. I despise going into a venue whose version of NOLO is soft drink or dull and sugary mocktails. It just feels lazy and, frankly, non-inclusive. We’ve had the pleasure of fabulous zero cocktails and sophisticated non-alcoholic drinks in rather fancy establishments, and it just seemed worthwhile to try and bring that level of consideration and respect to the drinks we offered at Ritual. We have a few delicious NOLO offerings that are made by small producers in Australia, and we love supporting them. And beyond that, we create our own signature non-alcoholic cocktails for the drinks list, inspired by what’s growing in our coastal harvest garden, what the season is like on the island, or what we’re feeling like drinking personally. We do a lot of experimenting, and we rely on our palates and instincts to point us in the right direction and fine-tune from there. The NOLO side of the cocktail program at Ritual provides me with a lot of creative freedom and joy.

Do you see the tastes of your clientele changing in what they’re drinking and how do you plan to keep your selection evolving and the number of sober curious visitors swell?

Oh definitely. Given the choice, we’re noticing that even the self-confessed sugar addicts lean into more floral driven drinks than they’d usually choose. It’s been an experiment on both sides of the bar, and I’m glad that people are trusting us to take them through different flavours and experiences. And even less sober-curious people have become more curious because of the way we position our NOLO drinks on the menu. They’re not an afterthought, they’re a major part of our offering. It gently nudges people to consider whether what they want in that moment is alcohol or an exciting drink. It also means we get people coming in specifically for our NOLO offering. Sometimes they grab a few bites for lunch and a zero cocktail then head back to work feeling vibrant and chuffed that they gave themselves a fancy treat without consequences. Or they settle in by the fire with a (non-alc) wine and cheese platter and then get to drive home anxiety-free. My favourite is those legends who come in for zero cocktails and dessert – they really know how to live life to the fullest! I do have one secret plan in slow action – I’d love to get more NOLO drinkers embracing the dominant bitter and sour flavours of our heritage. We introduce such drinks selectively, and they’re definitely not as popular (yet) but we don’t suggest them to everyone – I’d rather quietly offer them to someone whose palate is already optimistic about bitter or sour than try to entice someone who finds those notes abrasive. For now, our plan is to just keep letting things unfold intuitively. We change the offerings when it feels right. As long as our guests are happy, we’ll keep creating NOLO drinks that we love drinking.

If you are looking for alcohol free drinks Kingscote alongside a warm, considered dining experience, Ritual is well worth adding to your list. Whether you're settling in for a long lunch, meeting friends for drinks, or just want a proper grown-up option that isn't alcohol, Ritual has you covered.
